Urban Farm Summer Camp 2024
Teaching Children How to Live Healthier Lives in Connection with Mother Nature
Welcome to the Terrace Foundation Urban Farm!
Join us this summer at The Terrace Foundation Urban Farm for a once-a-week day in the gardens. Our program is open to children ages 11-15 starting July 2nd through August 20th. Each day after our morning review and check-in we will get into our subject of the day, this will include an outdoor classroom-style lecture followed by a hands-on science lab experience. At lunchtime, we offer a highly nutritious meal consisting of a salad, soup, and entree using ingredients from the farm whenever possible. After lunch, students take part in an artistic project that ties into our subject of the day, encouraging a different perspective in a scientific world. Our intention is to provide a balanced experience that incorporates both a right-brained and left-brained experience; sharing scientific facts, getting hands dirty, building a relationship with nature, and expressing what was learned creatively.
Daily Schedule
9:00 – Drop Off
9:00-9:30 – Morning Check-In – introductions, greetings, review of the previous week
9:30-10:30 – Lesson Lecture – academic deep dive into this week’s subject
10:30-11:30 – Hands-on lab and scientific lab experience in the garden
11:30-12:30 – Lunch & Recess – nutritionally-dense meal, lawn games
12:30-2:00 – Creative Project – arts and crafts project connected to this week’s lesson

Learn and Grow
We do our best to provide a variety of educational topics for our students here at The Terrace Foundation. Some of the subjects that we will cover are symbiotic farm ecosystems, insects and pollinators, soil regeneration, living foods, and more. Students will get hands-on experience growing plants in the garden, from seed to harvest and everything in between. You won’t want to miss our classes on composting and beekeeping featuring expert guest speakers and special projects like crafting a native bee house and building a compost pile. Each class is a fun and engaging experience that builds on the previous lesson. Students will be given an infographic of the material we learned and will take home a garden treat every day.

Meet The Educators!
Amanda Catlett
Director of Agriculture / Urban Farmer
As Director of Agriculture, Amanda oversees all happenings and supports our staff in the three garden departments at The Terrace Foundation – the tower farm, the soil farm, and the microgreens department. She works hard to create and execute functional systems that help the gardens to run smoothly and efficiently. In our small organization, Amanda wears multiple hats and also coordinates volunteers, manages new projects, hosts events, contributes to design decisions, and more!
Emma Burke
Education Outreach Coordinator / Urban Farmer
As the Education and Outreach Coordinator, Emma works on extending the nonprofit’s community relationships through building outdoor educational programs for schools. She loves working on all aspects of the farm from planting to distribution. What Emma cares about the most about is food justice and food sovereignty, and educating community members and kids about the importance of localizing food systems.
Austin Sharon
Marketing Coordinator / Urban Farmer
Austin’s passion for nature and nutrition has reached all corners of our organization. From working hands-on in all three garden departments to helping manage our Community Supported Agriculture program, social media & newsletters, outreach & fundraising programs, plus more, Austin is a determined individual. Fully embracing our mission to empower and educate individuals to be in control of their food supply, Austin is responsible for developing the curriculum used in our summer camp program.
Nila Barja
Art Enrichment Coordinator
Born in Bolivia and adopted by her American parents at the age of 9 through the Peace Corps, Nila has been creating and discovering her deepest magical self since the age of 9 years old. She recognizes the importance of creative expression and loves to connect her art classes with the natural world. She believes that every person is capable of making art with the most important thing being that you have fun when creating it. As an experienced instructor, Nila has all sorts of creative ideas to help our students get excited about being in touch with their creativity and Mother Nature.
